Male Androgenic Alopecia: The Science And The Solutions

hair loss treatmentMale androgenic alopecia, also referred to as androgenetic alopecia and more commonly known as male pattern baldness, is the most common form of hair loss seen in post-pubertal males. Male pattern baldness usually begins when the male is in his 30s or 40s, but it can also occur in the teenage years. Ninety percent of cases are hereditary.

Male pattern baldness is caused by a combination of gene variations and androgens, male sex hormones.

The suspected gene variation that triggers the hair loss sits on the X chromosome, which is passed down to men by their mothers. This implies a man may predict his future hair health by looking at the men on his mother’s side of the family.

Gene experts note, however, that other genes -- some of which could come from the father -- may also influence baldness. So hair loss is not strictly a mother-son inheritance condition.

A percentage of the male hormone testosterone is converted to a more potent androgen, dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT exerts a miniaturizing effect on the hair follicles across the top of the scalp. During a reduced growing phase, affected follicles produce fine-textured, un-pigmented hair -- called vellus hair -- that rarely grows beyond a couple centimeters in length. This results in a thinning of hair density in this androgen-sensitive area.

The word pattern in male pattern baldness stems from the identifiable, systematic ways in which hair thins and falls out of the scalp. It usually begins with a receding of the hairline at the temples, followed by or occurring simultaneously with a thinning of the hair density on the crown. Eventually, the two balding areas meet to form a typical U-shape around the back and sides of the head. The hair that remains is often finer and does not grow as quickly as it used to.

Over time all the hair follicles across the top and sides of the scalp may be affected, leading to -- but not always resulting in -- total baldness.

Thinning hair in women, on the other hand, occurs in different patterns. Read our previous blog post for more information on female pattern alopecia (FPA).

Baldness is a natural condition, not a disease. Men may choose to accept their baldness, letting it progress naturally or beat the baldness by shaving their heads themselves.

Hair Restoration Experts And Their Passion For Innovation

non-surgical hair loss treatment for fast hair growthThe Latest And Most Effective Breakthroughs In Reversing Hair Loss

What is trichology? And what is the role of a trichologist?

  • Trichology is the scientific study of the hair and scalp, evolving as a specialized discipline from dermatology in 1902. Trichology is a para-medical area of health care that embraces both naturopathic and western medicine, endocrinology and dermatology.
  • A qualified trichologist has studied and successfully completed a recognized Trichology Education Program. Trichologists identify and treat all forms of hair loss, hair shaft breakage, scalp disorders and scalp health. Hair is one of the body’s most metabolically active tissues, often reflecting the first signals of bodily sickness, deficiency or other internal disturbance.

Today’s trichologists are passionate individuals with a drive to uncover the most inventive and effective hair restoration solutions. Although the search for hair loss treatments goes back to ancient Egypt around 3100 B.C., trichologists are always looking ahead -- always pioneering the trichology industry forward.

The trichologists at HairSpa are no different. Using the latest technology and scientific knowledge, our hair and scalp consultants offer the best FDA-approved, scientifically supported and non-surgical hair loss treatments available.

Here’s a rundown of your non-surgical hair loss options with HairSpa:

1. Laser Hair Restoration
Exposing the hair follicle to low-level laser therapy stabilizes hair loss and promotes regrowth -- stimulating declining follicles, making existing hair thicker and fuller and even helping to heal lesions that are preventing hair growth. HairSpa’s laser stimulators include the Tricomax Laser Comb by HairMax and the iGrow Laser.

We also offer clinical treatment therapy with Laser Hair Care® on a biweekly, monthly or quarterly basis.

2. Specialized Hair Loss Treatment For Women
HairSpa uses a highly effective, clinically tested program called Tricomax Laser Hair Treatment (TLHT) that restores healthy, lustrous hair in six to twelve months. Tricomax, a scientifically proven topical formula, is accompanied by low-level laser therapy.

Hair loss and hair thinning in women is very common in Dubai, which may be due to our region’s dry weather and desalinated water. Read our previous blog post for more information on the possible link between hair loss and environmental factors.

3. Specialized Hair Loss Treatment For Men
The treatment HairSpa provides for men is called Laser Revivogen Hair Treatment (LRHT), and includes a regimen of proven hair rejuvenation cleansers and conditioners, low-level laser therapy and Revivogen, an FDA-approved topical treatment that blocks follicle-attacking hormones.

4.   Non-Surgical Hair Replacement
This meticulous and individually tailored process begins with a close examination of the area where extra hair is needed. Then one of our highly skilled hair replacement technicians makes a mold or template of the thinning or bald area, taking small samples of the hair. Based on this information, 100% human hair -- identical to your own hair in terms of color, density, texture, wave and thickness -- is selected and inserted, strand-by-strand, into an undetectable matrix of crisscrossed, transparent lace. This matrix is custom shaped to fit seamlessly and held in place using the Polyfuse™ method, an invisible medical-grade adhesive to create a perfect integration of the new hair into your own hair.

So now that you have a good idea of the innovative options we offer for reversing hair loss, how do you decide which one is best for you? Don’t worry -- you’ll never have to make that decision alone or uninformed. Our hair restoration experts help you choose the best course by merging their professional expertise with a meticulous assessment of your hair.

The purpose of this Hair Diagnosis is to investigate your comprehensive medical profile, including nutrition, lifestyle and hereditary factors. It also includes a microscopic scalp analysis with a computerized derma scope system. If the trichologist deems it necessary, he or she will obtain blood tests or refer to a medical specialist for further investigation.

During the Hair Diagnosis, you’ll also benefit from the latest technology in the hair health industry: HairCheck. This is a scientific instrument that accurately measures hair loss, hair growth and damaged hair. This technology allows the hair specialist to make the most appropriate suggestions for take-home products and hair loss treatments, as well as measure your response to these products and treatments after 6, 9, 12, 18 and 24 months.

At HairSpa, you’ll only be subject to scientifically tested techniques, proven to produce undeniable results. To learn more about the effective and innovative hair restoration treatments at HairSpa, visit our Hair Solutions page.

Hair Loss: Blame It On The Weather And Water?

hair loss dubai and weatherThe Environmental Triggers For Hair Loss In Dubai

There is plenty of information out there on the genetics behind hair loss -- how dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a derivative of testosterone, attacks hair follicles in both men and women. There are also medical conditions – such as anemia and thyroid issues -- and vitamin deficiencies that may lead to hair loss. But what goes on inside the body isn’t the extent of the hair loss story.

Hair thinning in women and men may also stem from environmental sources outside the body: specifically, the weather conditions and water quality.

Weather: DRY

You’ve likely grown accustomed to the arid climate here in Dubai. Maybe you thrive in the high temperatures, not minding the desert-like conditions.

But this dry heat may be what’s attacking the health of your hair.

Another trigger for hair loss is the desalinated water, which is used in most large Middle Eastern cities. Dry skin, rashes and allergies often accompany this hair loss.

Desalinated water, also known as hard water, is perfectly fine for general use and drinking, but it can pose major problems for skin and hair when the water’s particles per million (PPM) escalate beyond a certain level -- this happens when the water is distributed through pipelines. PPM is related to total dissolved solids (TDS), which includes minerals like calcium, magnesium, nitrate, potassium and sodium that are found in water. It’s the escalation of TDS that causes the hair loss, skin irritations and allergy issues.

Nielson recently conducted a study on behalf of Inversion Femme, the anti-aging supplement. The study had some interesting, yet disheartening findings -- 67% of women living in the UAE experience hair loss, making hair loss one of the most common aesthetic problems in the area.

This aesthetic problem is particularly rampant among Arab women, with nine out of 10 (92%) experiencing hair loss. Asian women are the second most affected group, with 80% experiencing hair loss, and Emirati women follow with 60%.

The study cited environmental factors, chiefly desalinated water and weather conditions, as possible causes.

So while there are internal, genetic triggers causing hair loss, the environmental factors cannot be ignored. Despite the fact that we have little control over Mother Nature, we do have control over the health of our hair.

With the right hair restoration treatment, reversing hair loss is possible. Visit us online at the HairSpa website to learn about the non-surgical hair loss treatment options available. We offer natural hair restoration solutions, which use low-level laser therapy to complement FDA-approved, scientifically supported topical hair loss formulas, that are customizable to your specific situation, gender and hair type.
